Jenny is disengaged, disruptive, she’s not hitting her KPIs and the team are starting to notice… should I fire her?

When a team member is negatively impacting the energy and motivation of the team, you need to take action to get everyone back on track. But you can be left wondering if something is wrong. You talk to her but she keeps saying everything is ok… what do you do?

Can you afford to let her go? Can you afford to keep her even though her attitude is affecting the rest of the team?

It all can be resolved if you approach the conversation of ‘how are you?’, differently to how you normally do! As people, we often tell people that everything is fine… even if it isn’t. We don’t want to be a burden on people, or sometimes we don’t even realise our attitude has changed!

It takes 3 months to recruit and train someone…

So, in a perfect world, you would recruit someone 3 months before you need them. And I know what you’re thinking… “Larissa, I can’t see the future!”. But actually, you can… sort of. Your numbers will always tell you what to do.

But nobody tells you how to do it all, how to be the ‘fun’ boss whilst also being the boss that gets stuff done so wages can be paid and clients are happy – for a lot of Salon Owners, it’s something we just have to learn on the job…

But, it doesn’t have to be that hard.

You can do it all! You can know how to have those conversations we all avoid and have clear meetings with your team whilst also still having fun at the same time.

Business Ownership can be lonely…and the reality is that your business can feel like it’s your entire life. Without it, who would you be?

You spend more hours in the day in your business than you see your partner, family, or friends. And whilst this is never the intention, you feel it’s just what has to happen to ensure everything gets done; putting out the team fires, the admin jobs, rebooking clients, marketing, cleaning, the list goes on!

Who else is going to do it like you can?

Then you get home at the end of a busy day, you’re exhausted, the kids are wanting to spend time with you, you have to help them with their homework or take them to their swimming lesson… but you can’t switch off and stop thinking about the salon, and worse, you feel guilty for spending time away from your business.

I know this well, this was me for years on end.

It’s not easy to find team members in today’s climate, right? So you suddenly feel the need to put more focus on your existing team culture. Build a culture that is so strong no one wants to leave…

But a mistake I often see owners making every day is, instead of focusing on building a strong salon culture, they instead act out of panic and desperation when it comes to their team.

You feel the pressure from your team as you don’t want them to leave, but this ends up with you saying yes to all the things…(even the things you don’t want to…such as a pay rise they haven’t yet earned).

You feel held hostage by your team, and give in to your team members’ demands so that they never leave, but this isn’t always the answer to winning team culture, and can leave you, the owner, being the one who misses out…

But this isn’t the leadership style that creates a culture where no one wants to leave! In fact, it creates the opposite, and your team members will always be looking for where the grass is greener…

There has to be something stronger, and I believe that comes from this ONE secret to building a winning team culture…

2022: The Year We Were Forced To Face Our New Normal

You’ve made it.

This last year is just about to be done and dusted. You have tackled all the highs and lows that have been thrown your way – so it’s time to celebrate!

We rode the wave of trying to manage a growing team, and navigating a shift in lifestyle demands as well as increased challenges in attracting & hiring new team members!

You were able to ditch the masks in the Salon and greet your clients and team as normal. Events and industry awards were able to be held, and so many Salon Owners were able to reconnect with each other again! How good did it feel to be able to have a hug again?!

As I share my top moments of 2022 in this episode, I would love to invite you to reflect on what your successes were in this last year.

Why? To make the most of this upcoming year and, to truly level up your business, you must decide to be and do something different than you’ve been in the last year.

And when you try to hire someone new, it’s crickets! It seems like nobody wants to work these days…is this familiar?

So to make up for it, you have to pull the weight for your team… you’re putting in all the hours, saying yes to all the clients…you have a large team, and yet, your Salon still isn’t growing…

It always feels like 2 steps forward, 3 steps back. You’re going round and round an ongoing loop with your team and your business hitting a plateau, and you feel like this is never going to end.

You find yourself asking, what is all of this for? You’re the highest earner, the one who is left mopping the floors at the end of the day…

Work Less & Make More – Becoming a “Smart” Salon CEO

Have you ever felt like: You’re working yourself to the bone: You’re busier than ever with clients, plus managing an ever-evolving team…

You’re hardly present with your family as work has taken over your brain space… but what makes it worse is you’re not growing.

But still, you end up saying YES all the time:

Like when a team member needs our help with something, we jump at the chance… because we don’t want to let them down
Or when a regular client wants to book with you when you’re ‘meant’ to be working ON the business (not in it)… you give in because you feel bad…

Or maybe you’re guilty of having shiny object syndrome…. Are you nodding your head right now? I know I’ve been guilty of this too…

But this is a HUGE mistake.

Because in reality, these are often the things that will halt forward momentum in our business.

As a result, you take 2 steps forward, 2 back. Your business is at a constant plateau, and you get super frustrated because you’re BUSY doing ALL the things- so you start to wonder– ‘why am I not growing?’ You get overwhelmed and burnt out… which leads to halting progress even more.

Agh! It’s a vicious cycle.

How a Risktaker Re-Defined Salon Success

Have you ever had someone tell you that you’ll never achieve something? That being a hairstylist will only take you so far? That there is no way that owning a salon will give you a life of freedom or profit?

I did, over and over again when I owned my Salon, and boy was I determined to prove them wrong!

In our industry, everyone’s journey to success looks different. Whether you begin your hairdressing apprenticeship at age 16 or age 30, whether you work in a small town or are a globally recognised stylist… Everyone has their own goals and ambitions and your journey is no less successful than the Salon Owner you see on Instagram, winning awards and flying across the world.

Success is actually how you define it.

And I believe that reaching success comes down to a clear plan for where you want to go, a roadmap of how to get there, and having the support behind you to achieve it…oh, and don’t forget to have a little fun along the way! (Did someone say ‘wine’?!).

So today, I want you to meet the globally recognised and ever-inspiring Patrick Cameron, whom I greatly admire for his dedication to this industry.

Legal Action: Two Words Every Salon Owner Dreads

Have you ever had a client threaten legal action against you and your Salon?

As a Salon Owner, I’m sure you have had had a moment (if not, a few) where you have had to deal with a situation that has gone wrong, like a really bad colouring mistake, and in return had to deal with an unhappy (and frustrated!) client.

Something has gone wrong in the Salon; the service didn’t meet the expectations of the client and you are left to clean up the mess that has been left behind. Sometimes this may mean dealing with further legal action….Eeek!!

Unfortunately, that is just what happens when we work in a service-based, client-based industry, or is it?

Things are going to go wrong, humans are going to make mistakes, but it’s how we overcome these moments where things have gone terribly wrong, and have things in place to prevent them from ever happening again in the future.

I want you to always be prepared for the worst-case scenario, the “what ifs”, because it may be the thing that saves your Salon. We need to keep ourselves and our Salons protected from anything that may happen in the future.

So, this is why I want to introduce you to Reonna Green, a hairstylist turned Lawyer living in the United States – how inspiring is that? Reonna is the founder of “She Trademarks” – an attorney that specialises in the beauty and hair world, I take my hat off to her for this!

You actually need more than just a strong team; you need a team of humans whose actions speak louder than words, who will support you when someone goes on maternity leave, who will cover for the team when others can’t make it in, and who will be able to manage the walls of the Salon, without you having to be there.

“Is It My Fault My Team is Leaving?”

Have you recently gone through a breakup?–and no, I’m not talking about a romantic breakup, I’m talking about a TEAM breakup!

I actually think a team breakup can be ten times more painful than an actual breakup...AND it’s even worse when they start dating the Salon down the road.

You’re left feeling confused, stressed, and yet again having to solve the problem of why your team isn’t sticking around. Not only that, but you have to spend the time that you were GOING to spend working on growing your business, finding someone to fill the role.

It’s a vicious cycle, and unfortunately one I see all too often.

In our industry, this seems to be the most common, neverending problem all Salon Owners face, so you aren’t alone! Why aren’t my team sticking around? Why have I spent so much time training them, only for them to leave 6 months later? Am I not paying them enough?
