You spend more hours in the day in your business than you see your partner, family, or friends. And whilst this is never the intention, you feel it’s just what has to happen to ensure everything gets done; putting out the team fires, the admin jobs, rebooking clients, marketing, cleaning, the list goes on!

Who else is going to do it like you can? 

Then you get home at the end of a busy day, you’re exhausted, the kids are wanting to spend time with you, you have to help them with their homework or take them to their swimming lesson… but you can’t switch off and stop thinking about the salon, and worse, you feel guilty for spending time away from your business. 

I know this well, this was me for years on end.

In this episode, I want to introduce one of my dear friends, Melinda. Melinda and I have worked together inside Salon Mastery for many years now and she has completely turned her business around from “being in the trenches” (we cried together on our first call) now her Salon is thriving in her newfound role as Salon CEO.

You were able to ditch the masks in the Salon and greet your clients and team as normal. Events and industry awards were able to be held, and so many Salon Owners were able to reconnect with each other again! How good did it feel to be able to have a hug again?! 

As I share my top moments of 2022 in this episode, I would love to invite you to reflect on what your successes were in this last year. 

Why? To make the most of this upcoming year and, to truly level up your business, you must decide to be and do something different than you’ve been in the last year. 

If nothing changes, nothing changes… If you do everything the same as you did last year, everything will stay the same.

Have you ever had a BAD APPLE on your Salon team? That one person in your Salon or Spa’s team who just can’t seem to get it right… 

And it starts to affect the rest of the team. 

This person’s behaviour starts eating away at you, and you find yourself thinking about it all the time. Like in the middle of the night. It’s CONSTANTLY worrying you. 

Chances are – if you have someone in mind right now… they’re the bad apple.

I know how tricky it is when this situation arises. Drama stirs within the team, and any attempt to fix the situation often just makes things worse…

It starts to feel like it’s out of your control. Can you effectively manage this person’s performance without seeming mean or confrontational? Can you give them another chance without the rest of your team resenting you?

The answer is  YES, you can.

And I know this to be true… because I have done it! When I had my Salon, I grew my team up to 30 women. It’s only natural for people’s performance to waiver now and again, and for a bad apple to pop its head up.

However, we were in for a rude awakening! I think we all came to realise that our old “normal” was no longer. COVID is still lurking, and we had to start adjusting to this “new normal”. Even now, Salons across the world are still experiencing lockdowns and restrictions around vaccinations, and not knowing when it will end… or if it ever will! Will we ever get used to this constant feeling of limbo? 

As a Salon Owner, you have had to get creative in finding new ways to generate income in 2021. Unsurprisingly, team was (and still is) a huge focus throughout the past year. I don’t think this will ever change in our industry. 

It has been stressful, to say the least. But now things are starting to look up! Whilst we are facing new challenges when it comes to vaccination guidelines, we have at least turned a corner.

Growing your Salon: it’s challenging. Can you relate?

Things are forever evolving in Salons; Owners have to constantly adapt systems and processes. Just like any evolution, things start to break. Perhaps what worked before, no longer will. Adapting is not always easy, but it does teach us fundamental lessons in return. Lessons, which I believe, are key to any successful Salon growth. 

If you’re anything like I was, you never feel like your Salon is ‘complete’, always striving for improvement – and that’s great! Improving, however, means things can’t stay the same. There have to be constant shifts from ‘norm’ to ‘new’.

Here at Salon Owners Collective, we could not relate more to this. That’s why I’ve decided to bring in one of my very own – team leader and operations manager, Suzy.

Having been with us for over 3 years now, she’s witnessed and learned so many valuable lessons while helping grow the business to where it is today.

She’s chosen to share her two biggest lessons around team management which I know any Salon Owner will find helpful.
