The Right Time to Recruit… is NOW!

“I am suddenly feeling quite panicked”

 

I recently had a Salon Mastery owner reach out to me, worried that she wasn’t leaving her team with enough support whilst she goes on a 3 week Europe holiday.

 

But, what do you do?

 

Do you take the risk and recruit a Front of House (or any team member) before you really need it? Or wait until you’re ready but risk leaving your team unsupported?

 

For context, this Salon Owner already has a team of 9 (with a mix of seniors and apprentices), everyone is pretty full and she was planning on hiring a front of house NEXT year… but not right now.

 

It’s a dilemma that I’ve seen and experienced before. You’re facing sudden growth but lack the support to keep going, but you’re not sure if the growth will continue to justify an extra team member.

 

One thing I always say… you will always be the roadblock to your growth. Remember that!

The Art of Prediction

When do you recognize growth? When it slaps you right in the face!

 

Salon growth is something that we all work and dream for, but sometimes after what feels like forever… growth comes rushing at us all at once and we don’t know what to do!

 

In a perfect world (bear with me), you would’ve recruited and replaced yourself 3 months ago!

 

3 months is the time it takes to recruit and train someone. It doesn’t matter if that person is replacing you (or a leaving team member), or if they’re a brand new addition… you’re going to need 3 months.

 

Which is why YOU need to learn how to predict and always be 3 months ahead. The thought of going 3 months without a stylist/therapist who doesn’t have a fully booked column is not ideal!

 

You need to predict the future and learn the 5 warning signs that a team member may leave.  A career pathway will also help you predict growth… if your team are moving up, they need someone to support them (time to hire!).

 

It’s also key to understanding the trends of natural attrition. Remember, if you have 5 apprentices, only 1 would stay long term (2+ years). You need to master the art of prediction!

 

You can ALWAYS afford a new person…

 

If you can make your new hire a Income Generating Activity (IGA) role, then it should be. Even though it may seem daunting to take on another team member, you can always afford an IGA person.

 

You just need to make sure you can train and support her to increase sales by her wage in the first 12 weeks… this can also just mean retaining what you have. As long as you're not dropping the level as a retention metric, they will still be an IGA team member.

 

So if her wage is $1000, she just needs to make sure her sales don’t drop so then in the next 12 weeks, you can increase by $1000. Remember, the $100K column is about selling your TIME not HAIR.

 

Become a $100K Mentor

 

Your Salon’s growth is up to YOU… remember YOU are the roadblock!

 

Not your team, clients… economy. Success relies on you putting in the work and becoming a Mentor to your team. Which is why you need to step out of the operational role.

 

Get out of the weeds and recruit the Front of House. And, what are you going to do? Invest your TIME into making her (and your whole team) $100K Stylists!

 

The word of the year is #ELEVATE. So elevate your team so you can grow into a $1 Million+ Salon.

 

You are the roadblock to your Salons growth, so take a step back and look at the numbers. If you’re on the path the growth… RECRUIT, RECRUIT, RECRUIT! IGA will always be able to pay for themselves… as long as you mentor them to become $100K Stylists.
