How to Enjoy a Stress-Free Holiday as a Salon Owner
“I need a fricken holiday… but I can’t leave my team!”
Holidays are supposed to be a time to relax and rejuvenate… yet for Salon Owners, they bring a whole lot of anxiety and stress.
And that’s before you even think about booking anything!
There’s an overwhelming fear that if you go on holiday, you’ll be returning to chaos: stylists have quit, clients have cancelled and complained… and the water pipes burst!
But that doesn’t happen if you prepare your team for you going on holiday. The main reason everything falls apart when you go on holiday is because you don’t have strong systems and processes in place and you don’t have a supportive culture.
And although it’s not something that will change overnight… you start preparing your team NOW for when you eventually go on holiday!
Preparation is key… which is why I created the MEDAL framework.
Here is: How to Enjoy a Stress-Free Holiday as a Salon Owner!
Meet Your Manager
Kick-off with a meeting.
Actually sit down and talk to your manager about you going on holiday! Define clear expectations and goals for their stewardship. Make a plan on how they’re going to WIN whilst you’re away.
BONUS: Encourage your manager and team to continue winning whilst you’re away by offering them a reward for when you come back (only if they’ve smashed their goals though!).
Explore What Could Go Wrong
Prepare for the worst!
Run through every possible scenario that has previously caused stress and discuss how they can be handled in your absence. This includes operational issues like sickness, late clients, and what to do if the water pipes burst!
Create a doc of emergency contacts of ‘who to call and when’ so they always know what to do.
This means you’ve covered your bases to ensure the team can address hiccups without you.
Decisions they CAN and CAN NOT Make
Outline a framework for making decisions.
It doesn’t matter if you’re going away for the day or six-weeks, your team will need to make decisions. Create a list of everything they can and can’t decide on and work though the problems (and solutions) with them. Let your manager take the lead, you’re just there to support and remind them of what systems you have in place.
Teach them the criteria you use for decision-making to ensure they can make confident choices aligned with your vision.
Remember, you both need to be prepared to live with the decisions they make. Have their back and let them know that you trust them!
Affirm Their Character and Leadership
Celebrate your team’s strengths.
Before you leave, boost their confidence! Let them know you have their back and that you trust they will support each other and continue to WIN.
Let Go!
Now get on that plane and GO!
You’ve done everything you can to prepare your manager and team… they will continue to be amazing.
Have confidence in your team and get ready to enjoy a spicy margarita… you deserve it!
MEDAL is key for going on holiday but they also play a big part in you becoming a Salon CEO. When you step into the Salon CEO role, you may not always be IN the Salon so your team need to be prepared to make decisions and know what to do.
Your Salon will THRIVE if your team can continue ‘business as usual’ without you. It’s time for you to enjoy some freedom!
Just a quick recap:
- You need to implement the MEDAL framework
- You will learn to trust and have confidence in your team… they’ve got this!
- Becoming a Salon CEO means sometimes you won’t always be IN the Salon
